When Is Indian Navy Day Celebrated?
Indian Navy Day is celebrated on December 4th to mark the launch of Operation Trident in 1971. Indian Navy also launched Operation Python a few days later to attack Pakistan's port city, Karachi, during the Indo-Pakisthan war of 1971.
Indian Navy Day History
During the war with Pakistan in 1971, the Indian Navy launched Operation Trident to attack Karachi harbour. The Navy has used an anti-ship missile for the first time in the operation. This operation took place on the night of December 4-5. Indian Navy sank four Pakistani vessels and destroyed Karachi harbour fuel storage tanks. INS Nipat, INS Nirghat and INS Veer are the three Indian Navy's warships that played a significant role in the attack. This is considered as one of the Indian Navy's successful strikes because of no casualties or losses.
Indian Navy Day Celebration
On December 4, the Western Naval Command celebrates the Indian Navy Day by bringing together their ships and sailors. The personnel of the Indian Navy display their skills at the Gateway of India, Mumbai.
The Eastern Naval Command at Visakhapatnam organises various activities and events on the Navy Day. The day starts with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Victory At Sea memorial located on the beach road in Vizag. On 4th December, thousands of spectators witness the skills of submarines, ships, and aircraft as a part of Navy Day Vizag celebration.
