The high-profile management entrance exam, Common Admission Test (CAT) will be conducted in November. The CAT registration window is active and will close in the month of September. Over two lakh candidates are expected to take the examination which will be conducted at test centres spread across around 147 cities.
CAT always stands on top of the toughest management entrance exams because the admissions to India's premier institutes, such as the IIMs, depend on this score. Many aspirants put in their best to get 99 percentile which is not easy to achieve. On an average, less than one per cent of CAT test-takers manage to score 99+ percentile in the exam. This means, out of more than two lakh test-takers, less than 2000 aspirants manage to score 99+ percentile.
So, it is evident that scoring 99+ percentile is possible in the CAT exam. Most of the candidates who achieved 99 percentile in CAT say out loud that there is no shortcut to crack the exam, other than hard work. Here are the tips that will help you be one amongst the 99 percentilers in the CAT exam.
Draft A Preparation Strategy
The first and foremost question that strikes the mind of aspirants would be - how to start the CAT preparation? Aspirants need to plan everything to ace the exam with over 99 percentile. One should draft a clear strategy for the CAT preparation based on their strengths and weaknesses.
Attempting The Minimum Number Of Questions
To score more than 99 percentile, one should attempt a minimum number of questions in the CAT exam. On an average, the correct attempts and score required for a 99 percentile is:
- Quantitative Aptitude (QA) - minimum 23 question out of 34
- Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) - minimum 22 questions out of 34
- Verbal and Reading Comprehension (VRC) - minimum 20 questions out of 34
Work On Accuracy
The accuracy is the most important factor in every competitive entrance exam such as CAT. Unless test-takers provide correct answers, the 99+ percentile remains a dream. They should also attempt the questions about which they are 100 per cent sure. One should increase their accuracy levels during these 2 or 3 months to gain over 99 percentile.
Understand The Difficulty Level Of Questions
Undeniably, the more you attempt, the more are the chances of attaining 99+ percentile. Attempting the minimum number of questions depends on the difficulty level of the exam. Aspirants should make themselves familiar with the scanning of the paper beside identifying whether the question paper is easy/moderate/hard.
Have To Hone Their Time And Speed
There is a sectional time limit in the CAT exam and each section will be provided with 60 minutes that makes altogether 3 hours. Aspirants have to save their time and increase their speed to score over 99 percentile. Effective time management can help you attempt at least 30 out of 34 questions.
Mock Test & Exam Analysis
The mock tests are very important to understand where you stand in the competition. It is advised to take the mocks at regular intervals. Taking mock tests alone will not help the aspirants. They have to undergo an analysis after every practise test or mock test.
CAT exam is not about testing your memory. It purely depends on the application of the concepts. Instead, prefer multiple ways to understand the concepts which will help you to ace the exam with over 99 percentile.
Smartness Is Required On Test Day
Smartness is required on the test day to earn 99 percentile. Never devote more than two minutes to a question and move on if it takes more than this time. Always remember that CAT has negative marking, which makes your percentile drop though you have attempted enough. Try to solve the easier questions first which will not only help you save time but will also boost your confidence.
