Established on 16th January 1860, St. Xavier's College, Kolkata is managed by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). It is a Catholic Christian Minority College which aims at providing university education to deserving candidates in a Christian atmosphere, especially to students belonging to the Catholic community.
One of the oldest and prestigious colleges in India, providing higher education in the field of arts and science, the St. Xavier's College aims at providing higher education to deserving candidates. Over the years, it has produced a line of distinguished alumni.
St. Xavier's College is affiliated to the University of Calcutta, Kolkata and it was recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under the UGC Act, 1956. It is also recognized and approved by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Bhubaneshwar to offer B.Ed. courses.
It has been re-accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an "A++" Grade (CGPA score 3.77 on a 4 point scale in the 3rd cycle) on 23rd January 2017.

St. Xavier's College, under the University of Calcutta, Kolkata, offers two years of postgraduate courses and three years of undergraduate courses in the fields of science, arts, commerce and management. Add-on certificate courses are also offered in this college.
A two year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) course is also offered at the college for those who have scored a minimum percentage of 50% from any recognised university at the graduate level.
However, S.C., S.T. and O.B.C candidates are given a relaxation of 5% marks for the admission. It also offers various professional degree and diploma courses in career-oriented programs. Under the IGNOU convergence scheme, it also offers diploma and degree courses in career-oriented programmes.
St. Xavier's College also offers various add-on courses under general and language departments. These are communicative English, Hindi, history, film studies and journalism departments.
Unlike other colleges under the University of Calcutta, the college has its own selection process. An online application process enables the candidates to fill in their academic achievements and interests.
