J. D. Birla Institute, Kolkata, also known as Jawahari Devi Birla Institute, was established in 1955 but came into existence in 1962 and managed by ‘Vidya Mandir Society’, an educational trust managed by the S.K. Birla Group, sponsors the college. 

The Institute is affiliated with Jadavpur University, Kolkata and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) under Act, 1956.

It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.61 on a 4 Point Scale in 1st Cycle).

The aim of the institute is to establish as a leading Institute providing higher education of higher standard with integrity, consistency and due diligence and to prepare the future generation with academic excellence.

It was a co-educational private unaided Institute provided a regular course in which is located in the urban part of Kolkata played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

College At A Glance:

Sushila Devi Birla, wife of eminent industrialist late L. N. Birla established a college for girls in her mother-in-law’s name in June 1962.

The college was named Smt. Jawahari Devi Birla Institute of Home Science and it filled a much-felt gap in the scientific education of young women from Calcutta’s conservative families.

Over five decades, the Institute has grown with the needs and demands of the changing times. A Department of Commerce was added in 1997 and another campus was started in 2002 to house the co-educational Department of Management. Later, the name of the institution was upgraded to J. D. Birla Institute.

The Institute also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of education, sports and curricular activities under the Jadavpur University, Kolkata also University Gold Medals are awarded to the toppers in each of the four B.Sc.

(Hons.) courses.

The Institute has been awarded the prestigious college with a Potential for Excellence grant by the University Grants Commission.

At present, the institute offers three years undergraduate and two years postgraduate courses in Science and Commerce stream with various specializations under the Jadavpur University, Kolkata. It also offers Post Graduate Diploma and Add-On Certificate courses.

University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by the Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and various other examinations are held in the Institute premises.

The admission criteria for the Institute is the centralized online process done by the Jadavpur University, Kolkata submits the online applications, attend the interview/counseling as per the schedules intimated through call letters send via email and Shortlisted applicants after the interview can proceed with the remaining admission formalities.
