Government Dental College & Research Institute, an autonomous institute, is the first dental college of Karnataka, which was established by the Government of India in 1958.

Government Dental College & Research Institute is recognized by the Dental Council of India (DCI), New Delhi. It is affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bengaluru.
The first postgraduate course was started in the college in the year 1965 on the subject of Orthodontia. This was followed by Periodontia and Oral Surgery in the year 1967. The postgraduate course on Oral Medicine, Preventive and Social Dentistry was started in 1973-74, followed by Conservative Dentistry in the year 1977.
Government Dental College & Research Institute is rated as one of the outstanding dental colleges in the country. The government of Karnataka declared the college as an autonomous institute and the college was renamed as Government Dental College & Research Institute (GDC). Under the Government of NCT of Karnataka, the college has been recognized as a 'Center of Excellence'.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) had an expert committee visiting the college and chose Government Dental College & Research Institute amongst a number of colleges in Southeast Asia to set up a service clinic.
Government Dental College & Research Institute offers the BDS after completing a five years undergraduate programme and the MDS after completing a three years postgraduate programme. It also offers various specialized courses.
The college also has a study centre for distance mode certificate courses under Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. The college also has a study centre, under which it offers certificate courses in distance learning.
Government Dental College & Research Institute conducts various partnerships and exchange programmes through collaborations with several well-known universities and institutes all across the world.
Admission to the college is based on merit as per the rules laid down by the university.
Students have to take an entrance examination that is conducted by the CBSE, to qualify for admission to the college.
