Established on 4th September 1978, Anna University, located in Chennai was formed by uniting 4 renowned technical institutions in Chennai, earlier known as Madras. Hence, it can be called a unitary type technical university.

The institute was formed with the aim of providing deserving candidates higher education in the field of engineering and technology. The university aims at holistic development of the candidates by focusing not only on their academic development but also on their all-rounded development by providing value-based and spiritually oriented education.
Since 1st August 2012, Anna University came into force as an affiliating type of University, which brought under one umbrella 540 engineering colleges which were affiliated to it to provide quality and uniform engineering and technical education.
Anna University is self-affiliated and it was recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) in 1979 under Act, 1956. The university is also approved and recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi to offer various engineering courses.
It was re-accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA score 3.46 on a 4 point scale in the 2nd cycle) on 24th September 2014.
Anna University is located in the southern part of Chennai city and it is 10 km from Chennai Airport and 3 km from the nearest railway station, i.e., Guindy. The campus of the university sprawls over an area of 189 acres and lies adjoining the Raj Bhavan in the south and Adyar river in the north.
It has three regional campuses at Tirunelveli, Madurai and Coimbatore, thirteen constituent colleges and 593 affiliated colleges (government, government aided and self-financing colleges) apart from the four department campuses mentioned above.
The University Grants Commission, New Delhi recognised Anna University and conferred the status of “University with Potential for Excellence (UPE)" on 29th March 2002 and 23rd March 2010, respectively.
The university has its own admission criteria. Currently, 29 undergraduate programmes and 90 postgraduate programmes in several areas in the University Departments are offered. Affiliated institutions offer 41 undergraduate and 57 postgraduate programmes.
In the University Departments, about 16,007 students have been enrolled in the degree programme and in the affiliated institutions about 7,21,276 students have been enrolled. There are about 14,023 Ph.D. scholars on the rolls in the engineering, science and technology programmes.
