The affinity of students towards smartphones

Smartphones are the talk of the town. These days, everyone aims to possess one. It has been reported that the affinity towards smartphones has even out-grown pets, television, relationship and sex, according to a recent survey. There was a season swept by the wave of mobile phones in the 90's and 2000's. But it has gradually graduated into the smartphone era. To top it all, students seem to be the most trending target group of people, to own the gear.

Surprisingly, studies also show that smartphones have aided in increasing the literacy level among students. Interactive e-books, games with captivating interfaces which engage the mind of the student, apps which have been introduced to ease the difficulty in learning are few of the ways which has helped in this area.

A smartphone gives a pocket computer experience to the owner, to access almost every type of data, read documents, watch streaming videos, work on emails, and use GPS to locate and navigate geographical locations, and with many other features. This is one of the reasons why a cell phone was clearly beaten by its lack of mobile operating system. Some of the common smartphone operating systems are: iPhone OS, Windows Mobile, Google's Android, and Linux.

Downloading apps on the smartphone is the 'in' thing. Children are so attached to it, that they wouldn't mind forsaking their other activities or interests to plunge deeper into the trend. They find the concept of smartphones 'too cool' for tricks and usage. Evernote is a commonly used programme among students which is utilised as study tool predominantly to take notes in the class, record lectures and read content related to the syllabus.

As newer features are added to smartphones with every model, it helps give students a good technological knowledge and familiarity with newer and efficient software interfaces.

Social networking on their smartphones is another feature which has captured the interest of students. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+, etc are few of the most commonly used social networking sites. Students use it to capture and record moments of interest in their life and share it with their friends.

Smartphones with internet access allow students to get the answers they want, as quickly as they need it. Google-ing any unknown question may bring forth millions of results which can help them further.

While this can help the student develop multiple facets of their personality, they should also keep in mind the dangers associated with it. For example, cyber-bullying is a common cause of suicides in the West. Students should be made aware of the downside of technology and that all information found online is not accurate. If used in a safe and controlled manner, smartphones can definitely be used to enhance a student's life.
