Help ease your child's transition to adulthood

One of the most important things you can do to pave a successful future for your child is to plan for your child's transition from adolescence to adulthood. You should start planning a transition service for your child from the onset of their teenage. During this period, you and your child are likely to start leaning new skills side-by-side.

Parents play an active role in the transition journey. Your child will begin to take on more responsibility and determine his or her own life, if parents provide encouragement and guidance along the way. The transition period could be a challenge for both the parent and the child.

Consider the following tips, as you plan a future for your son or daughter, to build a successful transition:

Help your child build self-determination and self-advocacy skills: Every child must have strong sense of their abilities and interests. They should be aware of things that affect them at work, in the community and their educational pursuits. Make your child understand that this transitional period is a wonderful time to explore different settings.

Help your child to develop healthy social relationships: Building social relationships are important tools to mingle in a community and it also provides a wider network of support. Although building social relationships can be problematic to some youngsters, planning a transition that opens opportunities for social relationships and recreation can build a bridge to success.

Develop helpful networks for your child: In the transition age, children may need support from a variety of sources. Start to expand networks for your child in your family, social group, professional circle, and other sphere of people who can help provide social, recreational experiences for your young-adult. Let the child look at the adults in the community and learn from them.

Plan financially: Financial planning is an important part of transition. It allows a person to set aside his resources and income to reach a work goal. The goals include things like enrolling in an education or training programme, obtaining employment, starting a business or purchasing a vehicle to commute.

Volunteer to help your child build a resume: Many young people struggle to find work experiences that help them compete in the job market. Volunteering to help them build a resume is a great solution. Young adults can build a resume that shows a prospective employer their abilities, initiative and dedication to work. It also helps your child develop additional social skills.

Help your child learn soft skills for employment: In addition to work skills and resume, people also need soft skills for their jobs. These may include being able to accept directions, dealing with conflicts and to engaging in interpersonal communication. Also, it includes being prompt, having appropriate hygiene and dressing up properly. You can help your young adult develop these skills by practicing them at home.

Helping your child plan and adjust for the future during his or her transition can lead to a successful future. To attain maturity, the adolescent brain of your child often faces challenges and stumbling points in life. This is especially important because parents help them make decisions and recover from mistakes to establish healthy lifestyle and values.
