5 struggles that you don't expect while studying abroad

Struggles you don't expect while studying abroad

Study abroad is an experience of a lifetime. It is undoubtedly one of the most amazing experiences you can take part in. It is not only about expanding knowledge in a specific field of study, but about the world in general. It also includes knowing variety of cultures, learning about oneself and also visualising the world in a different perspective.

Studying abroad brings incredible opportunities, however, it also provokes unexpected negative responses as well.

Here is a list of 5 things you have experienced or are currently experiencing or are likely to experience in future while studying abroad.

No matter how happy you are or will be in the city of choice. Sometimes, it does not always be what you want and expected it to be. Life just hits you.

For the first time, you feel conflicted with your nationality

You will be exposed to a completely new culture, of which you might know very little. Living with people who operate perfectly in the new country may arouse questions regarding your own nationality. You may have never thought to question your government or nationality before arriving in this new place.

You may feel conflicted and that may make you feel uneasy and unsure how to feel and react to the new circumstances.

Remember this: Overcoming different situations is an integral part of the abroad experience. By this means you are growing as an individual, expanding your mind. So keep calm.

Feeling like an outsider
Regardless of how well you are prepared to face the new environment, it is almost certain that you will end up feeling like an outsider.

Don't let this discourage you. This might be tiring at first, eventually this problem becomes smaller and smaller. Almost everyone you meet while studying will be friendly and encouraging and you will soon become one of them.

The language barrier
Overcoming the language barrier is one of the most obvious challenges of studying abroad. You may either be struggling to learn a new language from scratch or though you are fluent, you are unable to understand the local accent.

Not to worry, once you are immersed, the language barrier problem goes away pretty quickly.

Getting familiar with currency differences
This is also a challenging process. Currency differences does have a huge impact, if you are staying abroad for a longer time.

Work out a quick conversion system for yourself, so you can mentally figure out prices. Get to know the normal prices form locals.

Feeling of homesickness
Are you longing to go home for the holidays? Does something reminds you off home, family and friends? If you were not aware how important they were, you will find out now.

This feeling of being far from your support network is likely to be felt mostly for the first few months of your stay abroad. After a year or so, when you start making friends and building up support network, everything will be okay.
