This online course will introduce a multidisciplinary approach to archaeological landscapes and different ways sites can be studied using available online resources. candidate will learn to assess information from different sources, search archaeological databases and create your own maps using Google Earth and other tools.

Aims of the course:

  • To introduce online resources for the worldwide study of prehistoric and historic landscape archaeology.
  • To show how online resources can be used in the archaeological study of human use of the landscape.
  • To develop familiarity in students in using online resources, including Google Earth and similar interfaces, in archaeological landscapes of their own choice.

Course content overview:

  • This course will begin with an introduction to the archaeology of prehistoric and historic landscapes by outlining their development worldwide and summarising different approaches and methods used in their study.
  • Students will be introduced to the multidisciplinary approach underpinning interpretations and understanding of landscape archaeology. 
  • Archaeological sites will be used as a case study to present an aspect in the study of landscapes and draw together different online resources. The case studies will be drawn from different parts of the world, and from different periods. Each teaching week will introduce students to, and give them practical experience in, skills in mapping, interpretation and research.
  • Students will learn step by step how to find reliable information, how to use different online resources and search for archaeological and historical information on the history of man-made landscapes.
