UGC's Colleges of Potential Excellence (CPE) has been released. The University Grants Commission has released a list of "124 colleges from various states" which will get capital to strength their research and excellence. As much as Rs 1.5 crore will be granted to these universities over the next five years.
The colleges in the list are expected to "strengthen their academic and physical infrastructure for achieving excellence in teaching, research and outreach programmes".
Out of the 124 colleges only 3 colleges from Telangana have made it to the list while 13 colleges from Andhra Pradesh are in the list of CPE.
The reason why only 3 colleges from Telangana are selected are because, the colleges in this state are said to be weak. Though about 60 colleges participated from Telangana in the excellence scheme, only 3 were selected as the committee was looking for colleges/universities with excellent track records every year.
The number of colleges from other states across the country are: Assam (1), Andhra Pradesh (13), Bihar (1), Chhattisgarh (2), Goa (1), Gujarat (9), Haryana (3), Jammu & Kashmir (5), Jharkhand (1), Karnataka (16), Kerala (7), Madhya Pradesh (2), Maharashtra (28), Manipur (1), Mizoram (1), Punjab (7), Tamil Nadu (7), Telangana (3), Uttar Pradesh (9), West Bengal (7).
