Tokyo University team celebrates Diwali in India

Patna, Oct 24: For the students of Super 30, it was a special Diwali as a team from Tokyo University joined them in celebrating the festival of lights at the academy. Senior faculty member Yashino Harisho and other officials from Tokyo University called on students of Super 30 and joined them in lighting diyas (earthen lamp), bursting crackers to celebrate Diwali last night.

"We came all the way to be with the Super 30 students as Diwali is an occasion to share the joy. We had heard about it but were part of it with students of Super 30 is a special experience," said Harisho.

An excited academy student Amardeep Kumar said it was a special Diwali for the students. "We enjoyed Diwali with Tokyo University officials," he said. On the occasion, Japan's famed industrial group GGC sent gifts and sweets for the students.

The Super 30 programme, which prepares students from the humble background to qualify for the IITs, has been widely appreciated. Mathematician and founder of Super 30 Anand Kumar said it was a nice gesture on the part of the university and GGC to come all the way to Patna to spend time with the students on Diwali.

Harisho said Tokyo University will like to give scholarship to one of the Super 30 students for pursuing higher education there.

"The university will provide full scholarship to meritorious students for its various interdisciplinary courses, and we will like more students to go there," he added.

Kumar was last month invited to narrate his experience at MIT and Harvard University in the US and documentaries have been made on it.
