Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore gets 12-B status from UGC

Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore, gets 12-B status from University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, under section of 12 (B) of the UGC Act 1956.

On 10th January 2014, at New Delhi, decision was taken at the 497th meeting with the UGC officials.

According to the UGC officials, the officials had visited the Thiruvalluvar University, Vellore on 28th and 29th November 2013 to grant university status under UGC act.

Later UGFC officials submitted repost to the UGC and accepted it to grant 12-B status to the University.

UGC Chairman Ved Prakash, Vice-Chairman H Devraj, Secretary Upamanytu Basu, Director of the Commission Vikram Sahey and other 12 members had attended the meeting.

Thiruvalluvar University was established in October 2002 under the Thiruvalluvar University Act, 2002 (Government of Tamil Nadu Act 32/2002) as an affiliating University.

The University is located in a sprawling campus of about 112.68 acres, at Serkadu near Vallimalai, about 16kms away from Vellore city on the Ranipet - Chithoor Trunk Road. It also has a campus at Vellore Fort.

Around 109 colleges were affiliated to it in Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore and Villupuram districts.

P. Gunasekaran, Vice-Chancellor of the University said, "According to 12-B status would mean the listing of Thiruvalluvar University among the State Universities in India. The new status would enable the university to obtain various grants including Five-Year Plan grants from the UGC, UGC research grants, special project grants, building grants, grants of central funding agencies for development of the university, and grants for general development, sports development, faculty development, infrastructure development, SC/ST remediation and establishment of women's coaching centre."

Mr. Gunasekaran said, "The grant of 12-B status would enable the university to apply for international collaboration programmes and for starting innovative programmes with the support of the UGC and obtain specific project grants. The grant of 12-B status to the university would also enable the affiliated colleges which had applied for 12-B status to obtain the same from the UGC. The 12-B status for the affiliated colleges would enable them to get direct funding from the UGC for college development programmes and establishment of Centres of Excellence in various fields."
