NIT Surathkal offers short term course on PEDG-14

National Institute of Technology (NIT),Surathkal, has announced a short term course on Power Electronics In Distributed Generation (PEDG-2014).

The event is organised by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, under the aegis of NaMPET- National Mission on Power Electronics Technology (Phase-II), an initiative of Department of Electronics & Information Technology Government of India.

About the Course:

Generation and distribution of energy using small scale technologies close to its end users, is termed as Decentralised Generation. Distributed energy encompasses a wide range of technologies including wind turbines, solar power, fuel cells, microturbines, reciprocating engines, load reduction technologies, and battery storage systems. Onsite power generation has many benefits over the centralized power generation systems, as it eliminates the costs associated with the transmission and distribution of power over long distances. These small scale technologies can yield power from 1KW to as much as 100MW. The effective use of grid-connected distributed energy resources can also require power electronic interfaces and communications and control devices for efficient dispatch and operation of generating units.
The power converter is the interface between the load/generator and the grid so that fluctuated/uncontrolled inputs will not affect the performance of the system. Three important issues of using power electronics devices are:
(i) Reliability, which can be improved by using advanced control mechanism.
(ii) Conversion efficiency, which can be improved by using advanced power electronics devices like IGBT.
(iii) Cost. Since the cost of power semiconductor devices is decreasing 2-5 % every year for the same output performance, the price per kW for a power electronic system is also decreasing.

Specific Objectives :

  • To bring together senior professionals in the field of distributed generation to provide helpful information to younger professionals to stimulate the knowledge transfer from generation to generation.
  • Discuss the issues related to islanding and grid connected operations of distributed generators.
  • Explore the power electronic technologies to use as an efficient interface in distributed power generation.
  • Emphasize a range of both control and computing solutions to the generating plants based on their economics and reliability
  • Explore power quality solutions to this application.
