NIFT's new campus to be set up in Jammu and Kashmir

A new permanent campus of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) will be set up at Ompora, on the outskirts Srinagar.

 

According to the reports, the state government has conveyed its commitment to the Union Ministry of Textiles to chip in with Rs 67.47 crore as the state's share for the Rs 325 crore NIFT project for which 160 kanals of land have been earmarked.

The cost of the entire project will be shared by the Centre and State Government on 90:10 basis. According to a spokesperson, currently NIFT is presently operating from a temporary campus at IT Park Rangreth.

Presently, the institution is offering certificate courses of 6 months duration in Fashion Apparel, Illustration in Design and Studio Photography and is being looked after by Director NIFT Kangra, Himachal Pradesh.

There are plans to start regular undergraduate courses of 4-year duration in Fashion Design and Fashion Communication from the next academic session.

The modalities for making NIFT Srinagar fully functional were worked out during the visit of the Union Secretary Textiles, Dr S K Panda and Joint Secretary (Textiles) and DG NIFT, Navraj Goyal to the State last month.

The Institute is plannig to start regular undergraduate courses of 4-year duration in Fashion Design and Fashion Communication from the next academic session from the existing temporary campus at IT Park Rangreth till its permanent campus becomes functional at Industrial Estate Ompora.
