IIT-B ranks 29th in Times Higher Education ranking

Mumbai: Times Higher Education (THE) has recently released the Times Higher Education BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and Emerging Economies Rankings, in which IIT-B (IIT-Bombay) ranked 29th, up from it's last year's position of 37. The Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore), ranked 25th last year, moved up to 16th position in the 2016 rankings.

While Mumbai University was not among the top 200 universities, which featured Jadavpur, Pune, Panjab and Calcutta. A Mumbai University professor said it was difficult to decide to figure out why they have not made it to the list. A university official said, "We do not know if the data was given on time or data we submitted reached THE. We need to check that."

Around 16 Indian institutes/universities featured in the top 200 rankings.

Phil Baty, editor, World University Rankings, said, "The BRICS and Emerging Economies Rankings used the same 13 rigorous and demanding performance indicators as the overall World University Rankings, so institutions have to demonstrate high standards of performance across teaching, research, international outlook and industry links."

IIT-Bombay scored 17.7 in international outlook, 28.6 in research, 48.5 in citations, 42.3 in industry income and 35.6 in overall ratings. Almost all IITs had only 1% international students on their campuses, according to key statistics released by THE. This is the second achievement for IIT-Bombay within a week; it was ranked 93 in the first edition of Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) graduate employability rankings.

Institute director Devang Khakhar said, "We are extremely happy with the continuous progress we are making in the world rankings. The recent rankings are a testament to the successful, ongoing evolution of our institute as a global education centre in the field of engineering education and research." While IITs in Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai have gone up in rankings, IIT Kharagpur and Roorkee have gone down a few notches.

Seven IITs featured in the top 100 list and eight universities made it to the top 200 list.
