Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's First Ever Karate Tournament 2014

Kolkata, August 19: Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan held the First Ever "West Bengal State Karate Tournament 2014" with Seigo-Kai Karate Do Association of India. 350 teams from 120 schools all across districts of West Bengal participated. 8 different age groups from 4 years to 18 years demonstrated their martial art skill in the tournament

A total of 38 events in two different categories (Kata and Kumite) enthralled the spectators. The winners were awarded with gold, silver, bronze medals and certificates.

Prasun Mukherjee, Executive Vice Chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and former Commissioner of Police, Kolkata is the Chief Patron of this tournament.

It was an attempt to instill a disciplinary mentality among the students to stay healthy and lead a meaningful life.

The tournament was meant for the school children and there was overwhelming response from all across the state. 350 teams from 120 schools from Murshidabad, Howrah, Hooghly, Midnapur, North 24 Parganas South 24 Parganas and Kolkata participated in this unique Karate Championship. 8 different age groups from 4 years to 18 years demonstrated their martial art skill in the tournament.

This maiden initiative to spread the awareness about martial art and its importance in our daily life to build a strong body and mind was successfully conducted under the able guidance of Mr. Rebati Ranjan Raha, the president of Seigo - KaiKarate Do Association of India. Mr. Prasun Mukherjee, Executive Vice Chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and former Commissioner of Police, Kolkata is the Chief Patron of this tournament.

The events were divided into two categories - Kata or Demonstration and Kumite or Fight/Bout. The young contestants had tested their mettle through 38 different events (Kata - 20 and Kumite - 18) in this day long tournament. The winners were awarded with Gold, Silver, Bronze medals and certificates.

Mr. G. V. Subramanian, Joint Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan commented on the initiative, "The importance of sports in the life of a young student is invaluable. At present more than 13,000 students both men & women are being trained under 47 recognized training centers in different parts of our country of which 11751 are registered with us.
