The Higher Education system in India is a mixture of several stark, and some contradictory, realities, which includes both public and private universities.

Public universities are supported by the central and state government and private universities are supported by various private bodies and societies.

The higher education system in India is the third largest education system in the world.

There are signs of improvement in the education system. Ten universities from India made it to the list of Asia's top 100 universities.

Increased investment in infrastructure, research, skill development and foreign universities partnerships, which made these universities to be placed at the top position.

The fifth India Today-Nielsen Best Universities survey took into account over 170 universities across India to determine the best universities.

These universities have been ranked based on the overall score comprising of perceptual and factual scores; not on perceptual and factual ranks.
