Bangalore University is planning to introduce a foreign language in Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) courses from the next academic year 2015.
The decision has been taken at the Academic Council meeting. Senior academic members expressed the need for introducing a foreign language. Then, University has decided to introduce German and French from next year.
Kendriya Vidyalaya and some private schools in the state has already introduced German as a language for study. The Academic Council members felt it was time to impart the methodology of teaching foreign languages to aspiring teachers.
BU, Vice-Chancellor B Thimme Gowda said, "As the House has expressed its desire for introducing foreign languages in B.Ed courses, we will consider it from the upcoming academic year and choose a language based on its popularity."
Gowda said, "We will look at job opportunities in the market and decide between French and German. When we introduce a foreign language, we will impart the methodology of teaching a subject like all other subjects."
"The courses (in B.Ed) will focus on the methodology of teaching German and French," explained a senior professor from the education department.
Bangalore University would become the first university in India to introduce foreign languages in B. Ed. courses.
