Every year about 100 to 200 technical colleges, which are offering engineering and MBA courses across the country are closing down as there are no takers for technical courses.
Nevertheless, there has been increase in number of takers for pharmacy colleges following which various college managements have sought approval to start new colleges.
According to TOI, Anil Sahasrabudhe, chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), who was in Ahmedabad to attend a start-up seminar at the Gujarat Technological University said, "AICTE on an average gets applications to cancel permission for 150 to 200 technical colleges. The council also receives over 600 applications annually for starting new colleges in the country."
"On an average, out of 10,800 colleges in the country, a total of 1.5 lakh technical seats including engineering and MBA seats fall vacant every year, " he added saying that there are several reasons for technical institutes to down shutters.
