The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi has approved six new engineering colleges and 7,164 more engineering seats in Gujarat.
A total of 70,115 engineering seats are available for admission for the academic year 2014-15.
In 2013, around 62,951 engineering were available for admission. The new engineering colleges will be set up in Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vallabh Vidyanagr and Navsari.
Gujarat state officials said that AICTE has already issued a letter of intent for these six colleges and apex body will send the final approval.
This year, around 69,741 have cleared the class 12th examination, out of which 63,000 students are eligible for admission.
According to sources, in 2007-08, the number of seats which are available for admission is more than the students who've passed the examination. But, now all the candidates who have passed the examination will get admission.
Some of the officials are predicting that this year around 12,000 engineering seats may lie vacant.
