NGOs to be appointed to monitor ragging issues in varsities: UGC

NGOs appointed to monitor ragging in varsities

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to appoint NGOs in order to monitor ragging issues in varsities across the country. Based on the requirements, UGC has invited proposals from various NGO who are the voluntary sector organisations.

After the approval of the proposal, the respective NGO will be responsible to monitor the 24/7 anti-ragging helpline and associated database.

According to an official, the selected NGO will not only monitor the anti-ragging helpline but also will be closely watching if all institutes and varsities are taking up adequate measures in order to stop ragging.

The official notice issued by UGC states, 'The University Grants Commission invites Expression Of Interest (EOI) from prominent NGO or NGA (Non Government Agency) with proven track record in the areas of anti-ragging in educational institutions'.

The officials said, "Till now the helpline was a responsibility shared between the HRD Ministry and the UGC, where a call centre after receiving a complaint would forward it to the relevant authority for further action. We expect this new development will help us make the helpline more functional."

The UGC Chairman, Ved Prakash said, "This is expected to bring a strict atmosphere with professional minds on the job. It will be a campaign to understand the status of ragging cases across the country."

"The responsibilities of the elected NGO will be to monitor and report whether institutions have created the database out of affidavits submitted by students and parents and to keep a check whether the concerned institute has taken appropriate steps in complaints received," he explained.
