The University of Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, has decided to start Bachelor's degree (B.Voc) in Plumbing and Carpentry vocational course.

This course is aimed to provide training in Plumbing, Carpentry and other vocational skills.

This new course will commence from next academic year 2014-15.

This course is applicable for the students who discontinued their class 12 examination, and want to obtain a degree in a vocation.

UGC starts degree course in plumbing

UGC chairman, H Devraj said, Commission has approved the Bachelor's degree to start from next academic year in colleges, polytechnic colleges and universities across the country.

"This course will help those who practice plumbing, carpentry and other skills get a degree. This programme will be conducted in a credit system with flexible modules so that even if they are unable to attend classes continuously they can complete the course," he said.

Bachelor of Vocational Course (B.Voc) is three year degree course. Institutions that offer the degree will be allowed to design the course as per the needs of the local environment. Besides the core subject, credits have to be offered on allied disciplines or trades. However, it is unclear whether the course would help an unskilled person gain a degree and, of course, skills in carpentry or any such core subject.
