IIT Kharagpur Vision 2020 Initiative: Director announces major investment in research through Enhanced Infrastructural Facilities and Challenge Grants

In his first open house interaction with all faculty members as Director of IIT Kharagpur, Prof P P Chakrabarti, emphasised on a culture of scholarship that is to be founded on an environment of deep and relevant research.

 

This knowledge is to be infused into the teaching programmes to make them more vibrant and 'knowledge creation' oriented. In order to facilitate the same and achieve results within a short term, he announced major investment in research infrastructure in terms of central research facilities covering development of experimental, computational and innovation laboratories.

This would also include a research park in Kolkata and an world-class research hub and summer international academic semester at IIT Kharagpur.

As part of the Vision 2020 initiative, the Director announced a series of new research grants at all levels to ensure competitive and collaborative research.

These include enhancing of new faculty startup grant by more than five times (up to INR 28 lakhs each), more than 20 competitive seed challenge grants of INR 25 lakhs for Assistant and Associate Professors in their areas of specialisation, four open competitive seed challenge grants of INR 1 crore, each for interdisciplinary and basic sciences and two grand challenge seed grants of INR 2.5 crores each.

Additionally he announced at least five competitive seed grants of INR 2.5 crores each for departments to propose an area of emerging thrust where it wants to attain pre-eminence.

He strongly reiterated the focus on quality and stated that the outcome will be benchmarked on publications in the highest quality peer reviewed journals and conferences.

Among other important criteria will be intellectual property creation and dissemination in terms of patents and licensing, obtaining matching grants from external agencies and visible national /international impact. National and international collaboration with the world's experts will be encouraged in these projects.

With this announcement coming from the Director right at the onset of his assuming charge, a significant churning is being taking place within the Institute.

The faculty members and departments are already in the process to develop and submit effective proposals which aim to take the Institute to the next level at the global scenario.
