ISM students hold protest over IIT tag
Demanding conversion of Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad into an IIT, hundreds of students from the institute today staged a dharna here to press for their cause.

"We want an early conversion and end the confusion among the students and faculties," said one of the students.

The issue is to be taken up by the IIT council when it meets soon, the students said.

The students have been agitating for an IIT tag for their institute for the last couple of years.

Some of the MPs, including Inder Singh Namdhari, attended the dharna, the students said.

Sources, said the Council is in favour of forming a committee to examine afresh the proposal of ISM Dhanbad for conversion into.

Meanwhile, another student asked, "When the matter of upgradation of IT-BHU was not reviewed by the IIT Council, why has this conversion been referred to the Council?" He said, "The Ministry of Human Resource Development needs to provide an assurance to the students that a bill regarding the upgradation of ISM-Dhanbad to an IIT, would be tabled in the Winter Session of the Parliament this year."

Nearly 1,200 students of ISM were present in the protest at Jantar Mantar. "We plan to continue our agitation tomorrow as well," the student added.

The Planning Commission had recommended the conversion of ISM into an IIT last year after which the proposal became an agenda item for the meeting of the council of the IITs on January 7 this year.

It was decided in the meeting that the proposal will be examined by a committee. Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, established in 1926 as a specialised institute in the field of earth sciences, is now a full-fledged engineering college with 17 departments.
