A Book on 'Indian Sociology' released
A scholarly book entitled 'Indian Sociology: Engagement with Values' has been formally released by the Hon'ble Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Surabhi Banerjee at the Centre for Sociological Study, Central University of Orissa, Koraput on Tuesday. The book is written by Dr. Kapila Khemundu, Assistant Professor in Sociology, Central University of Orissa.

Releasing the book Prof. Banerjee said "this is a historic moment for the university and this book is like a living organism, definitely will travel across the country". She is giving importance to the worth of an author while working on a book.

The author has encapsulated accounts on value study in sociology are rooted in the historical development of sociology as an independent discipline since its inception. Contrary to expectations, the recent emphasis on value study has reinforced existing knowledge on value analysis by providing a new perspective.

This book critically examines the complex, and many layered multi-dimensional approaches to understand sociology of values through Western and Indian sociological traditions. This piece of work is the author's Ph.D Thesis, submitted at Jawaharlal Neheru University, New Delhi, in the year of 2007 in which his Mentor and Supervisor Prof. Anand Kumar has perfectly created a space to compile the works of many sociologists and putting them together in a value frame. The valuable and inspiring suggestions drawn from his teachers of the Centre for the Study of Social Systems became instrumental for completion of this work.

Though Value study is a multi-dimensional approach, but this work has some limitations. The knowledge on values has been defined and attempts were made to understand sociology of values mainly through Structural Functional, Conflict and Critical Approaches by referring both Western and Indian Sociological Traditions. The integrative approaches are also referred to understand value study in Indian sociology.

Finance Officer of the University Mr. Sreenibas Chandra Prusty along with other officials, the faculty members and the students were present on the occasion.
