Tamil Nadu gets 180 new MBBS seats
The Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi giving approval to the new medical college in Tiruvannamalai with 100 seats and the Madras Medical College in Chennai is set to open new building increased to intake by 85 seats.

By opens the new Medical college in Tiruvannamalai will increase the number of government medical colleges in the state to 19 and the number of medical seats to 2,530. Official said that the construction of the medical college in Tiruvannamalai is nearing in completion.

 

Madras Medical College in Chennai constructing new building in the old jail premises and that building will be inspected by MCI officials. Soon students will be shifted to the new building for the next academic year for theory classes and visit the hospital for clinical sessions.

The New medical college opening in Tiruvannamalai will be affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University. Initially, University had 31 affiliated medical colleges which includes 13 self financing and 10 deemed universities.

A senior health department official said they were looking to increase the number of medical colleges and seats not only to give more students a chance to become doctors but also to make quality healthcare accessible to the poor.

Official said, "As the first move we are upgrading the facilities in district hospitals to the level of medical college hospitals. While it will help us improve healthcare facilities, it will also make it easy to start a college once we establish such facilities and recruit specialists. We find that, its extremely hard to find qualified staff in non-clinical subjects,"

Tamil Nadu is having high number of Medical Colleges in the country compared to many other states, yet every year there is tough competition for admissions. The cut-off for medicine is and high is 92% for reserved category and 99% for general category students.

MMC Dean Dr V Kanasabai feel that increasing the number of government medical colleges will help deserving students to get into medical colleges without paying huge capitation fees.
