WMU Likely To Have A Branch In India
The Indian Maritime University (IMU), Chennai celebrated its fourth university day on Wednesday, Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan attended the function. Shipping Minister said that the country could soon get a branch of the World Maritime University (WMU). Talks on this regard has already begun with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

He also said that he had talked with IMO secretary general Koji Sekimizu. Efforts to set up a WMU branch in this country is significant as the global shipping industry is facing a slump, with hundreds of maritime graduates fining it difficult to get a job. Chennai Based IMU plans tie-ups with various international maritime universities.

Vasan Said , "Despite the recession, there has been a growth of maritime trade in India and institutes like IMU can bridge the gap between supply and demand of sailors and merchant engineers,"

There is an 13 maritime institutes are running the maritime courses present across the country, in which 8 institutes are run by the indian government and 5 are by private organisations.
