High Court Puts Lucknow University's Polls On Hold

Lucknow University's Polls On Hold : HC
The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has stayed the ongoing electoral process for the student union elections in Lucknow University. The polls were slated for Oct 15, 2012.

A bench of justice Umanath Singh and Justice Virendra Kumar Dixit ordered the stay on a petition filed by a Lucknow University student Hemanth Singh. The petitioner had requested the bench that the polls be held as per the age of candidates as on the date of their admission in the university and based on the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee.

Hemanth has appealed that in the age of candidates provision, the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations were being violated. He also contended that if the age provisions were adhered to, many candidates would be declared invalid for contesting the polls.

He further pointed out that the Delhi University and Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna University in Dehradun had implemented the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations. However, the Lucknow University administration had opposed the petition.

The next hearing is scheduled for October 17th. Polls to student unions are being held across the state on the directives of the Samajwadi Party (SP) government. In its manifesto, the SP ha promised to review student unions in degree colleges and universities.

Also, the previous Government headed by the Mayawati had banned the Students unions. What do you think? Should universities conduct Student Union Polls? What are the benefits of having and Student Union? Share your views...
