Clashes Between IIT Kharagpur & CIC On GATE Scores

IIT Kharagpur and CIC Over GATE Scores
The refusal of IIT-KGP – Indian Institute of Technology – Kharagpur to reveal marks and names of the candidates shortlisted through GATE- (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering ) 2010 for admission in different M.Tech courses has certainly raised some eye brows. The reason claimed by IIT-Kharagpur in front of CIC- Central Information Commission was that the admission to the IIT- KGP M.Tech programmes in the academic session 2010-2011 was not based on the GATE exam scores.

However, the statement made by IIT Kharagpur is completely contradictory to the working mechanism of the IIT's. All the 7 IIT's, including IISc- Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore conduct GATE exam jointly to offer admission to various post graduate programmes offered by these institutes.

The whole issue blew out of size when an IIT Kharagpur professor, who is currently suspended from his duties, filed an application to RTI in August 2010 seeking the names, scores and particulars of those candidates who had qualified the GATE exam and had been selected for the personal interview in 2010.

The pioneer claimed in the hearing on January 12, 2012 that the institute has given false reason for not providing the details. The information commissioner ordered the CPIO to crosscheck the details and asked the dean to submit a sworn affidavit to both the petitioner and the commission if what IIT Kharagpur claiming was right.
