The Karnataka pre-university education (PUE) department wants to close Pre-University (PU) colleges, which are having fewer than 20 students. The PUE department is trying to filter such colleges in the state. It is believed that north Karnataka has many PU colleges that face the threat of shutting down. Already five colleges in Bidar and Yadgir districts have been shifted.
The staff and faculty of such colleges will be moved to colleges which have less number of faculty and staff. If there are other colleges within a 10km radius, the College wont be shifted but will be closed.
The results of the second PU examinations showed that many colleges with a 100% result had less than 20 students. The attempt of closing down such PU colleges is not only for un-aided Collges, but this will affect the government colleges as well.
However, there have been demands for establishing new PU colleges from Chikmagalur, Udupi and Shimoga districts. These districts have been generating good results in PU examinations every year, but in higher level it has been decided not to sanction any new government PU college here.
