Some of the courses that falls under these categories are totally ignored by students, some have a student strength below 500 or the number of colleges offering them too less. Not even 5 Colleges across the city offer such courses.
In another development, a committee headed by M Siddananda, officer on special duty at BU's exam branch, has also suggested discontinuing multiple textbooks for Kannada and English for undergraduate courses and replacing them with just three books -- one each for arts, sciences and commerce/management streams.
At present, the university has prescribed different text books for Kannada/English language papers for courses like BA, BSc, BCom, BCA and BBM respectively. This is causing delay in setting of question papers, valuation and announcement of results. It has been referred that language textbooks be prescribed for at least three years because frequent change of textbooks causes confusion among teachers and question paper-setters.
BU which has to hold semester-wise exams to thousands of students in 654 colleges, believed that there will be a huge reduction in the number of question papers if some of the subjects are discontinued. The university now sets up 1,500 question papers for undergraduate courses and 700 for postgraduate. The final decision is yet to come.
