DU to implement semester-system this yea
Already being introduced across 13 undergraduate science programmes last year at Delhi University (DU), the semester system would be implemented for humanities and commerce courses. The recent Delhi high court verdict has left the other departments with little option on implementation of semester system.

According to reports, the Faculty of Social Sciences at Delhi University have cleared all the pending semester-based syllabi besides the history syllabus. This indicates the beginning of semester system at the university from this academic session.

The semester-based syllabi for political science, geography, sociology and economics have been approved by the faculty of social sciences.Professor Roma Chatterjee of the sociology department had organised the meeting. But, during the faculty meeting, only 15 of its 100 members were present.

Dr. B. Chatterjee, head of the department of history have stated that they have not been able to prepare a new syllabus on the basis of semester system for this new academic session. Since, the process will be time consuming, the history department wants the vice chancellor to bifurcate the syllabus under the semester system by invoking his special powers.

DU has been avoiding the introduction of the semester system for long, with strong opposition from lecturers. However, the English department has also finally agreed to prepare the syllabus according to the semester system. For now, it will prepare syllabus for the first two semesters only.
