What Is A Deemed University?

Deemed university is a status of autonomy granted to high-performing institutes and departments of various universities in India. This status of deemed-to-be-university is granted by Department of Higher Education, Union Human Resource Development Ministry, on the advice of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India, under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956.

The UGC began in 1956 after Indian parliament passed the University Grants Commission Act "to make provision for the co-ordination and determination of standards in Universities and for that purpose, to establish a University Grants Commission."

1. BITS Pilani

Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani (commonly known as BITS Pilani), was established by late Mr G. D. Birla in 1964. It offers various courses and the institute has a vibrant campus life. The Ministry of Education, Govt. of India, declared this institute to be a deemed university.

2. Bharati Vidyapeeth University

This university was established in 1964 and was declared as a deemed university in 1996 along with a group of higher educational institutions located in Pune. It is one of India's largest multidisciplinary universities.

3. SRM Institute Of Science And Technology

Sri Ramaswamy Memorial (SRM) Institute of Science and Technology (formerly known as SRM University) was established in 1985. In 2002, UGC granted the deemed university status to SRM Institute of Science and Technology in Chennai, which includes the SRM Dental College in Ramapuram.

4. Banasthali Vidyapith

Banasthali Vidyapith in Banasthali was established in 1935. It is affiliated to Banasthali University. The institute was granted the deemed university status in 1983 by UGC. The institute also provides Merit cum Need Scholarship to encourage students to take up higher studies.

5. VIT Vellore

VIT was established in 1984 and offers a quality research training experience to its students and is acclaimed for its research excellence. It earned a Grade 'A' accreditation by NAAC. The students will enjoy the global standards of infrastructure while pursuing the course.

It was established in 1980 in Visakhapatnam. It is popular for providing world-class infrastructure, highly qualified faculty and quality in education. It also provides Merit cum Means Scholarship.

7. Birla Institute Of Technology, Mesra

Birla Institute of Technology also known as BIT Mesra was established in 1955. It is accredited by NAAC and is recognised & approved by Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) - London (UK) and others. It was conferred the deemed university status in 1986.

8. Kalinga Institute Of Medical Sciences (KIMS)

Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences was established in 2007 at Bhubaneswar. It's affiliated to KIIT University. This medical institute has been conferred the distinction of a deemed university by Universities Grants Commission (UGC) of India. KIMS is also approved by Medical Council of India (MCI) and Dental Council of India (DCI).

9. Manipal Institute Of Technology (MIT)

Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) was established in 1957 as a self-financing engineering college. It is approved by AICTE and is accredited by NAAC with Grade 'A'. In 2000, it became a constituent institute of the deemed university Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE).

10. Sam Higginbottom Institute Of Agriculture, Technology & Science

The institute was established in 1910 and is affiliated with the University of Allahabad. This agricultural institute was declared as a deemed university in the year 2000 by the Government of India and received B++ accreditation from NAAC.
