Dermatology is the specialization in the treatment of skin, hair nails and scalp, and the area of health care which focuses on diagnosing infections or other skin conditions in these areas.

The skin is the the largest sense organ in the human body. It covers the body, provides protection and the sense of touch. It encompasses 15 per cent of an average human weight.

 

The color of the skin is because of the presence of the chemical called melanin and skin plays an important role in keeping up the temperature of the body.

We can see how important skin is for our functioning. And just like any other part of our body, skin is prone to diseases and illnesses.

To treat and help people who suffer through conditions that affect their skin, a field of scientific study, research and health care has developed over the years, called Dermatology.

Dermatologits occasionally conduct physical examination with the use of black light. Certain disorders such as systemic diseases, are healed with prescribed antibiotics or other kinds of medications.

What does a Dermatologist do?

As a dermatologist you will be diagnosing and treating different diseases ranging from skin cancer, psoriasis to nail infections.

Dermatologists are also involved in the improvement of mails, skin and hair of their patients, in terms of their appearances.

They are masters when it comes to decreasing wrinkles and other visible signs of aging and removing the acne scars.

These professionals also perform several types of minor surgical procedures, like redaction of moles and using techniques like Moh's surgery - a specialized procedure that removes skin cancer from sensitive regions

Dermatologists also provide education and preventative care for skin and other health-related issues.

How to become a Dermatologist?

Just like any other medical course, dermatology requires significant knowledge in the ares of biology, physics and chemistry. An aspiring dermatologist must set their minds on these subjects and start working on the same.

In school, you will have to take up the Biology stream, for class 12 examination or its equivalent. One will have to prepare for the entrance examination which will lead the students to medical courses offered by the colleges.

Followed by the acquiring a seat, you will have to continue your MBBS which will take 4 years. After the MBBS you will have to take up House Surgency.

After the House Surgency you can take up a postgraduate course in Dermatology, thus your experience will be specified. There are some colleges that adhere to entrance examinations for allotment of seats for masters courses as well.

You need to be registered with the Medical Council of India.

You may continue your academic career by following doctoral degree or you can go ahead and gain experience by treating people in government hospitals or private clinics.

There is a huge scope in dermatology as there is an increase in the level of skin diseases today. Almost everyone comes across a situation where they have a rash or an illness which needs medical attention.
The pollution and increase of toxic elements in our everyday life is the reason behind it. Now is when dermatologist will have more demand than ever before.

Further a dermatologist can go into the field of teaching and mold the future generations.For many dermatologists research is a very important aspect. They focus on getting published in national and international journals, providing credibility to their work.

How much will you be earning in the filed of Dermatology

Starting as a fresher, you will be receiving a salary of Rs.40,000 to Rs. 60,000 as a dermatologist. This amount will depend on the education and the experience that you may have received.

Private practitioners who have had a long time of experience will be earning much more than this. The location of your practice also plays an important role.
