Dr. S.B. Mujumdar established Symbiosis Institute of Mass and Communication, Pune in 1990. It was also called SIMC. The institute was under the governance of the Symbiosis Society that was set up in 1971.
The college is self-affiliated with the Symbiosis International University, Pune. The institute is approved and recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. SIMC has also been awarded the ISO 9001:2008 Certification.
SIMC turned out to be one of the best institutes in the country that provided media studies, along with management and social studies. It aimed at producing trained industrial professionals in the field of media studies.
In the beginning, the institute was known as the Symbiosis Institute of Journalism & Communication (SIJC). It was renamed as Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication (SIMC) to focus on training in media and go beyond journalism.
In the year 2007, taking into consideration the widespread changing needs of the institute, it was renamed as 'Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication'. In 2002, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India conferred the 'Deemed to be University' status on Symbiosis as a result of the excellent quality of education given by Symbiosis institutes.
Currently, Symbiosis has campuses at Kolhapur, Nashik, and Pune in Maharashtra and also at Bangalore, Hyderabad and Noida.
In 2006, SIMC was included in the ambit of the Symbiosis International University, which was a remarkable achievement for the college.
SIMC offers MBA in Communication Management with specializations in public relations, media management, marketing and media analytics and brand communications. It also conducts a programme in Mass Communication, MA (MC) with specializations in journalism and audiovisual.
Students can seek admission to these courses through the Symbiosis National Aptitude Test (SNAP Test), which is an entrance examination conducted on a yearly basis. For admission, students can also opt for the GE-PIWAT process which is conducted in a separate way by the individual institutes.
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has conferred the college with the status of "College with Potential for Excellence (CPE)".
For its MBA - Communication Management programme, in the B-school category, the college was ranked 35th. In 2017, the National Institutional Ranking Framework ranked it at number 61 in the list of management colleges in India.
SIMC has several tie-ups with top management institutes in the ASEAN and EU countries. For the students and the faculty members, SIMC conducts several international exchange programmes.
