Stella Maris College, Chennai is a Catholic institution of higher education for women in Chennai, India was established in 15th August 1947 and run by the Society of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM), a religious congregation founded by Blessed Mary of the Passion (Helene de Chappotin) in Ootacamund, Tamil Nadu in 1877.

The college is affiliated with University of Madras, Chennai and it is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) 8 & 12(B) in July 1977 under Act, 1956.

It is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA Score 3.68 on a 4 Point Scale in 3rd Cycle) on 21st February 2014.

The aim of the college is to build a vibrant and inclusive learning community in a culture of excellence sustained by a sound value system that promotes responsible citizenship and effects social change for the women.

It is a women's autonomous minority college, providing regular courses in which is located in the urban part of Chennai played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.

The college also received the numbers of achievements awards in the field of education, sports and curricular activities under the University of Madras, Chennai. The college received the best rank in Arts and Commerce category.

The college conferred the status "autonomous" on 22nd September 1987 and also conferred the status of DBT (Star College Scheme) on 6th March 2009.

Ten years later, in 1997, it adopted the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) in order to offer students a broad-based education which would serve to prepare them to meet the challenges of an increasingly competitive environment.

At present, the college offers three years undergraduate and two years postgraduate courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, and Management streams. It also offers Post Graduate Diploma and Add-On Certificate courses.

Research programmes such as M.Phil, Ph.D., and PGD courses are part of the academic curriculum.

University examinations of different courses, examinations conducted by the University of Madras, Chennai, and various other examinations are held in the college premises.

The admission criteria for the college is submit the online applications, attend the interview/counseling as per the schedules intimated through call letters send via email and Shortlisted applicants after the interview can proceed with the remaining admission formalities.

The college also conducts coaching classes for both faculty and students who are preparing to appear for the NET and SLET exams.
