Formerly known as Topiwala National Medical College, Nair Hospital Dental College in Mumbai was established by Dr. V. M. Desai in 1933. Earlier, Nair Hospital Dental College, Mumbai was just a part of National Medical College.
Nair Hospital Dental College is affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. The college has been approved and recognized by the Dental Council of India (DCI), New Delhi. The college aims at improving patient care by attaining clinical expertise through research and education.
Under the rule of the British Government, the college was started with the help of Mahatma Gandhi, Maulana Shaukat Ali and Dhawan Chamanlal. Dr. Nair later donated a land of 2 acres. This was near the Tardeo Bridge.
After this, the college was relocated to its current location and it came to be known as B.Y.L. Nair Charitable Hospital and Topiwala National Medical College. A dental clinic with a single chair was established by A.L. Nair. In this way, the dental college had a humble beginning.
Earlier, the Bombay Municipal Corporation refused to take over Nair Hospital Dental College when the name of the college was sent to the list of assets of Topiwala National Medical College. The college suffered a financial crisis in 1940 and then in 1946, it was handed over to the Bombay Municipal Corporation. In 1954 for the BDS course, Nair Hospital Dental College got affiliation from the Bombay University.
Nair Hospital Dental College is rated as one of the best dental institutions in India in the field of dental sciences. The Outlook Magazine has ranked it as one of the best government dental colleges in India.
The syllabus of the college was initially based on German and American standards and a diploma of LDSc was awarded to the graduates. This was not only recognized by the foreign universities of Germany, America, and Britain, but also by the Government of India.
Nair Hospital Dental College offers various specialized courses and BDS (five years undergraduate) and MDS (three years postgraduate) programmes.
The college also conducts a distance education programme under Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi and provides certificate courses.
Nair Hospital Dental College has tie-ups with several institutions and universities all across the world and offers research partnerships and exchange programmes.
Selection of candidates to various courses is based on merit as per state quota, as has been put up by the university. An online application form enables prospective students to fill in their qualifications and achievements as required by the college. For the cut-off percentage, students have to examine their best of four/PCM/PCB, the one that is applicable for applying to the college.
