Formerly known as College of Dental Surgery, it is credited for being the first self-financing dental college in India in the private sector.
This dental college had a humble beginning. Initially, it was set up with limited infrastructural facilities under a thatched roof. Then it was moved from the original building to the Biochemistry Block to what is now the outpatient department of Kasturba Hospital.
Earlier, when it was known as the College of Dental Surgery, it was affiliated to the Mysore University (1965-1980) and then it was affiliated to the Mangalore University (1980-1993). Finally, in 1993, it was affiliated to the Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE).
It is an internationally acclaimed dental college and one of the finest centres offering higher learning in oral healthcare keeping in mind its mission.
Manipal College of Dental Science offers an undergraduate (BDS) programme and a postgraduate (MDS) programme for 5 years and 3 years, respectively. It also offers courses in various specializations.
The college offers facilities like distance learning and offers certificate courses through its tie-up with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi. The college also conducts exchange programmes and research partnerships with various renowned institutions and universities all across the world.
The college follows a selection process in which admission is granted as per merit basis. Candidates need to fill in an online application form listing their achievements in the academic area and other areas of interest. The college provides admission as per the rules laid down by the University as per state quota.
