On 7th February 1916, Lady Hardinge Medical College was established by Baron Hardinge. It is a medical college for women, located in New Delhi. The college is under the control of the Government of India and in 1950 it became a part of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, the University of Delhi.
Under an Act of Parliament, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India took over the management of the college. The Kalawati Saran Children's Hospital which is attached to the Lady Hardinge Medical College was built in 1956.
Lady Hardinge Medical College is affiliated with the University of Delhi, New Delhi. It was approved and recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi.
The college was established by Lady Hardinge, who was the wife of Baron Charles Hardinge, the then Viceroy of India. In order to commemorate the visit of Queen Mary in 1911-12, the college was named Queen Mary College & Hospital. On 7th February 1916, Baron Hardinge inaugurated the college in the Delhi Enclave area and the hospital and the college are named so in the memory of Lady Hardinge.
Earlier, the college was managed by a governing body as it was an autonomous institution. In 1953, the Board of Administration constituted by the Central Government took formal charge and started managing the college.
During this time, Lady Hardinge Medical College was affiliated to the University of Punjab, Lahore. However, to take the examinations, students had to go to King Edward Medical College in Lahore. In 1950, the college was re-affiliated to the University of Delhi, New Delhi. In 1954, the postgraduate courses were started.
The Week ranked Lady Hardinge Medical College in the 7th position among all the medical colleges in India. Currently, the college offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate and add-on fellowship courses in medical streams.
Lady Hardinge Medical College has tie-ups with several top institutions and universities across the globe and conducts research partnerships and exchange programmes with them.
In order to get admission to this college, a candidate has to qualify in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and All India Post Graduate Medical Entrance Examination (AIPGMEE) which are conducted at the national level.
To apply to this college, students must have scored at least 60% in the 12th board exams.
