On October 1, 1933, the institute was established as a University Department of Chemical Technology (UDCT), was popularly known as UDCT, Mumbai by the University of Mumbai.
Due to the academic excellence, UDCT was granted autonomy under University Grants Commissions (UGC) by the University of Mumbai and further converted into an Institue i.e. Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology (MUICT) on January 26, 2002.
Under the World Bank TEQIP programme, the Govt. of Maharashtra granted this institute full autonomy in June 2004. Later, the recommendations of the Maharashtra Government and the University of Mumbai, the ICT was granted a "Deemed University" status by the MHRD on September 12, 2008, with all provisions of the UGC for funding support and renamed as Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT).
The institute is recognized and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi.
It is accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A++" Grade - (CGPA Score 3.77 on a 4 Point Scale in 1st Cycle) on 27th November 2017.
It is a co-educational institute located on a 16 acres campus at urban part of Mumbai and providing regular courses for deserving candidates.
At present, the institute offers courses at undergraduate level i.e. Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (B.Chem.Eng), Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm)
The institute also offers several courses at the masters and doctorate level which specialize in Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering, and Pharmacy etc.
According to NIRF report, ICT has been ranking one of the top-ranked institutes for their academic excellence and also received various grants and projects from the UGC, DAE, DBT, DST and other agencies,
The institute also receiving grants from Indian and foreign industries, with several centres of excellence i.e.
- Centres of Advanced Studies in Chemical Engineering, Food Engineering, and Technology, Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, Physico-Chemical Aspects of Textiles, Fibres, Dyes & Polymers
- UGC Networking Resource Centre in Chemical Engineering, DBT-ICT Centre in Energy Biosciences, ICT-DAE Centre in Chemical Engineering Education and Research, Centre for Green Technology
