Indian Institute of Technology Mandi was also known as IIT Mandi is an autonomous premier engineering and technology institute was established on 24th February 2009 located in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. The IIT Mandi Cell was set up at the IIT Roorkee on 18th March 2009, to steer the activities of the IIT Mandi.
Brief History:
It is one of the eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India under The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011 which declares these eight IITs as well as the conversion of Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University to IIT. The Act was passed in the Lok Sabha on 24 March 2011 and by the Rajya Sabha on 30 April 2012.
It is one of the parent institutions under Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), therefore it is affiliated with this institution. The institute is approved & recognized by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
IIT Mandi was mentored by IIT Roorkee, which hosted the first batch of students. IIT Mandi's permanent campus (about 14 km from the historic city of Mandi) is functional and under construction along Uhl River (a tributary of River Beas) at Kamand, Mandi.
The institute admits students into various B.Tech., M.S, and Ph.D. programs (as of 2016). Timothy A. Gonsalves joined as the first Director of IIT Mandi on 15 January 2010 and R. C. Sawhney served as the first Registrar of IIT Mandi.
IIT Mandi ranked 6th among all IITs in Nature Index based on the number of publications in 2015-16 and 3rd after IIT Bombay and IIT Kanpur on the basis of publications per faculty.
Currently, IIT Mandi offers Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programs in four disciplines namely:
Like all the other IITs, admissions to these programs are done on the basis of merit list of JEE-Advanced, the second phase examination of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which is an all India engineering entrance examination.
IIT Mandi also offers postgraduate programs like M.S.(by Research), M.Sc.
and M.Tech. under various departments. Currently, IIT Mandi offers M.S. program in fields of Basic Sciences and Engineering, M.Sc. program in Chemistry and M.Tech. in Energy Materials.
For any candidate to be eligible for admission, he/she must have a bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology or master's degree in appropriate Sciences with valid score in GATE or equivalent national level examination or GRE in appropriate discipline. Shortlisted candidates are called for personal interview and based on which admission is offered.
IIT Mandi also offers the Ph.D. program in the field of engineering and basic sciences. To be eligible for admission process, the candidate must have a master's degree in Sciences with a good academic record and a valid GATE score or UGC/CSIR NET/ Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology with a good academic record/ B. Tech degree of any IIT with a minimum of CGPA of 8.0 on a 10.0 point scale or with a valid GATE Score or B. Tech. / B.E degree from any recognized University in India with a minimum CGPA of 8.0 on a 10.0 point scale or equivalent with valid GATE score.
About Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT):
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) are the autonomous public institutes of higher education, located in India. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which has declared them as institutions of national importance and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance etc.
The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists twenty-three institutes located at Bhilai, Chennai, Delhi, Dhanbad, Dharwad, Goa, Guwahati, Jammu, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Mandi, Palghat, Patna, Ropar, Tirupati, and Varanasi. Each IIT is an autonomous institution, linked to the others through a common IIT Council, which oversees their administration.
The Union HRD Minister is the ex-officio Chairperson of IIT Council. The IITs had a common admission process for undergraduate admissions, called IIT-JEE, which was replaced by Joint Entrance Examination Advanced in 2013.
The post-graduate level program that awards M.Tech, MS degrees in engineering is administered by the older IITs (Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Dhanbad, Roorkee, Varanasi, Guwahati).
M.Tech and MS Admissions are done on the basis of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
In addition to B.Tech, M.Tech and MS programs, IITs also award other graduate degrees such as M.Sc in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry, MBA, Ph.D. etc. Admission to these programs of IITs is done through Common Admission Test (CAT), Joint Admission Test for Masters (JAM) and Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED).
