Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Mohali was established on 3rd September 2007 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, based on the recommendation of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister.
It is recognized and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and also by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Punjab.
It is one of the premier institutions established to impart & provide in the field of higher education for the deserving candidates and prove to be a milestone in the part of progress.
The aim of the IISERs which is a premier institute dedicated to research and teaching in the basic sciences to carry out research in frontier areas of science and to provide quality science education at the undergraduate and the postgraduate levels.
It is autonomous self-affiliated co-educational institute which is awarding its own Masters and Doctoral degrees, providing a regular course which is located in an urban part of Mohali played a pioneering role in the field of higher education.
The history of the institute was approved by The Planning Commission in New Delhi in July 2006 and land was provided by The Punjab State government.
The foundation stone of IISER Mohali was laid on 27 September 2006 by the former Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh.
Initially, the institute started its working from a transit campus in Mahatma Gandhi State Institute of Public Administration (MGSIPA), Chandigarh.
In March 2010, the institute started shifting to its permanent campus in The Knowledge City with the opening of Central Analytical Facility (CAF) and completed the shifting in May 2013 by shutting operations in MGSIPAP complex Chandigarh.
IISERs Mohali is also a member of Association of Indian Universities. Since its inception, IISERs Mohali has published over 900 research papers in highly reputed national and international journals.
Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali was ranked 33 Top Government university in India 2017, achievement in research fields and ranked 52 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in the overall ranking.
IISERs Mohali has initiated the course of five years of Integrated Masters level (B.S. - M.S.), Doctoral Program (Ph.D.), and Integrated Doctoral Program in Integrated Sciences in an intellectually vibrant atmosphere of research.
Apart from this, The Institute also offers skills in areas such as scientific inquiry, problem-solving, communication skills, computational sciences, electronics and instrumentation and workshop practices.

Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) was created in 2006 through a proclamation of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, to promote quality education and research in basic sciences.
Soon after the announcement, two of these Institutes at Pune and Kolkata, respectively, was started in 2006. This was followed by an Institute at Mohali (2007) and at Bhopal and Trivandrum in 2008.
Each IISER is a degree-granting autonomous institution with a prime focus to integrate science education and research, with a motive of attracting bright students and world-class faculty.
