Established in 1997, Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode or IIM Kozhikode or IIMK was set up as an initiative of the Government of Kerala, the Government of India, the IIM Society and leading members of the Indian industry.
A premier institute and an autonomous body offering higher education in management and technology, it was founded under the Indian Institute of Management Bill, 2017 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), the Government of India. In 2017, the National Institutional Ranking Framework ranked IIM Kozhikode in the fifth position.
Under its own affiliation, Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode offers several programmes. The institute has been approved and recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. The Government of India has recognised it as an Institute of National Importance (INI). It has also been awarded an ISO 9001:2008 Certification.
One of the twenty IIMs to be set up in the country, Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. It is also the fifth Indian Institute of Management established in collaboration with the Kerala Government.
The Chairman of the Council is the Minister of Human Resource and Development, Govt. of India. A Board of Governors is in charge of its control and administration. This board-managed institute is free from external interference and enjoys operational freedom.
The first Post Graduate Program (PGP), which is equivalent to MBA, was started with 42 students at the National Institute of Technology Calicut, which was the temporary campus. The site where the present campus is located at Kunnamangalam was finalized in the year 2000.
In 2001, the architect of the India Habitat Centre in Delhi, Joseph Stein and Stein Mani Chowla Architects started designing and constructing the institute. The hilltop campus of IIM Kozhikode was ready in 2003 and classes were started in the same year.
The campus was inaugurated by APJ Abdul Kalam, the then president of India and Mr. A.K. Antony, the then chief minister of Kerala.
In 2001-2002, an online management education programme called the Interactive Distance Learning (IDL) was introduced for working executives. IIM Kozhikode can be given the credit of conducting the first programme of this type among all the IIMs. This programme was started with 300 class contact hours. Currently, it has been extended to 450 class contact hours. It is one of the most successful executive management education programmes in the country.
In 2007, the Fellow Program in Management (FPM), a doctoral programme, was also started. Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode in order to establish a Center of Excellence for Academic Leadership as a part of the Singh-Obama Knowledge Initiative, signed a memorandum of understanding with Yale University in 2010.
Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode offers diplomas in management (two years) and a Residential Executive Programme which is a full-time programme (one year). The institute also offers doctoral level fellowship programmes and an ePost Graduate Programme in Management. It also conducts several faculty developments and executive education programmes.
Students seeking admission to IIM Kozhikode should clear the CAT (Common Admission Test) and GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test).
IIM Kozhikode conducts several exchange programmes for the faculty and the students and has tie-ups with several renowned institutes in the EU and ASEAN countries, France and Austria.
Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs):
The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are currently twenty in number. These are autonomous public institutes that offer courses in management education and research in India. These institutes offer doctoral, postgraduate and executive education programmes.
Based on the recommendation of the Planning Commission, the IIMs were set up with the initiative of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. Under the Indian Societies Registration Act, all the Indian Institutes of Management are registered as societies.
All the IIMs are autonomous institutions and the day-to-day operations are carried out independently.
However, the IIM Council oversees the overall strategy and the administration of all IIMs.
India's Minister of Human Resource Development heads the IIM Council. The Council consists of the directors and chairpersons of all IIMs and also senior officials from the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India.
On 24 January 2017, the Union Cabinet approved the Indian Institute of Management Bill, 2017, according to which the IIMs were declared as institutes of national importance. This means that they will be able to grant degrees and make important changes in the institute as and when required.
On 28 July 2017, the IIM bill was passed by the Lok Sabha and on 19 December 2017, it was passed by the Rajya Sabha. On 31 December 2017, the IIM bill became an act after the receipt of the presidential assent. The names of the IIMs are listed below:
The flagship programme across all IIMs is the two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP).
This offers the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM). These are equivalent to regular MBA programmes. Some IIMs offer to graduates with work experience a one-year Post Graduate Diploma Programme.
Some IIMs offer a doctoral programme, the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM). This is globally considered to be equivalent to Ph.D. Most IIMs offer part-time programmes and short-term executive education/EMBA courses. Unique programmes are also conducted by certain IIMs.
