Established in 1899, Hindu College, located in Delhi is a constituent college of the University of Delhi. It was established by Krishan Dassji Gurwale. One of the premier colleges of Delhi, it was founded to provide higher education to deserving candidates and become a landmark in the field of education.
The college is affiliated to the University of Delhi, New Delhi and was recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 2(f) & 12(B) on 1st January 1956 under the UGC Act, 1956. It was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with "A+" Grade (in a 1st cycle) on 2nd December 2016.
Located in the urban part of Delhi, it is a government institute and a co-educational college which provides regular courses. As a grant-in-aid college, the government decides on the provisions to be provided to the students and also the fee structure.
The college was originally affiliated to Punjab University as the University of Delhi did not exist at that time. The college initially started off from a building in Kinari Bazar, Chandni Chowk. However, in 1902, the college faced a major crisis.
The college was warned by the Punjab University that if it did not get a proper building of its own to operate from, the college would be disaffiliated. Rai Bahadur Lala Sultan Singh bailed the college out of this situation. It was he who donated this property at Kashmiri Gate, Delhi, which belonged to Colonel James Skinner, to the college. From here, the college functioned till the year 1953.
In 1922, when the University of Delhi was founded, three colleges were taken over by the University of Delhi. These were the Hindu College, the St. Stephen's College and Ramjas College. These three colleges were the first of the colleges to be affiliated to the University of Delhi.
Since 1935, Hindu College has a Student's Parliament, the only college in Delhi to have such a facility.
Hence, it provided a platform to many national leaders to motivate the youth: Subhash Chandra Bose, Annie Besant, Mahatma Gandhi, Motilal Nehru, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sarojini Naidu and Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
During the Quit India Movement, the staff and students of this college supported Gandhiji wholeheartedly and some of them even went to jail. The college was closed for several months.
Under the University of Delhi, Hindu College had received many accolades in the field of education, sports, and extra-curricular activities at the city, state and national level.
The college is ranked as one of the top colleges in India. With over 100 faculty members, the college provides courses in the science, commerce and humanities streams.
For the Department of Biotechnology, at the college, the Ministry of Science and Technology of India has awarded the 'Star College' status to Hindu College.
Hindu College provides undergraduate (three years) and postgraduate (two years) courses in the fields of arts, commerce, and science. It also provides various specializations under the University of Delhi, New Delhi. Add-on certificate courses are also offered.
Several exchange programmes are also conducted with the universities of foreign countries. Certificate courses in Asian and European languages are also conducted here in the International Languages School.
Hindu College has its own unique selection process. An online application process enables the prospective applicants to fill in their academic achievements and interests. Only those who have registered with the university are eligible for admission to the college.
To get admission to this college, candidates should take into account their percentage marks, i.e., best of four/PCB/PCM, whichever is applicable. They must make sure that the cut-off percentage that is declared by the college is adhered to in case of admission to different courses.
Various examinations are held at the college. These are the university exams of different courses and also exams conducted by the University of Delhi, New Delhi.
