Surviving teamwork

The experience of working as a team can be exhilarating. On the other hand, it can also give you nightmares as it involves interacting with people from all walks of life and conflict and misunderstandings are bound to follow. The challenge lies in overcoming shortcomings and extracting the best from each teammate.

Whether you like it or not, teamwork is here to stay. So equip yourself with the following tools.

Communicate effectively
Teamwork thrives on good communication skills. Without this, there might be problems in interpersonal relations, which could ultimately even end in the failure of the project.

Lend your ear
Listening skills can be as important as communicating skills. It is not enough to communicate your ideas or extend your input. You should listen actively to what others are saying, otherwise you risk misunderstanding - thereby creating a failure in communication.

Respect others' views and proficiency
A very important thing to is to respect others' views. Apart from listening and communicating, learn to respect others' proficiencies. Teamwork can be successful only with each individual's input. So, concentrate in doing your part well and let the other professionals give their inputs.

Obey the leader
The leader of the team is like a conductor in an orchestra. If you don't follow his or her instructions, you are bound to go off-tune. This, in turn, will lead to disharmony in the team that could contribute to the failure of the project.

Discuss, don't argue
You are here to discuss something and not argue. So, lend a patient ear. Evaluate what the others are saying and then speak your mind. As teamwork involves various people from various sections, discussions are bound to happen, but avoid letting it border on the argumentative.

Don't get emotional
Avoid getting emotional in a meeting or a discussion. It will only cloud your thinking process and lead to unnecessary bickering.

Stay motivated
If you are the team leader, learn to motivate the team. If you are a team member, goad the others into feeling a sense of motivation. This is a very important factor in teamwork because it pushes your team members to excel and meet the team's goal.

Feel like you belong
A sense of belonging to the team will go a long way in helping the project at hand. It is like a small temporary family coming together for a purpose.

Teamwork can be fun. But, it can also get frustrating when things don't work out. The irony is that the success of teamwork lies within the team and no external force can help it in anyway. So, let the team decide if many hands make light work or too many cooks spoil the broth!
