DAAD: Information on Studying in Germany and Scholarships
The DAAD (German
Academic Exchange Service) is an association of German Higher Education
Institutions with a branch office in New Delhi, India. DAAD gives
information on higher studies in Germany and provides counseling
for students and scholars wishing to pursue higher studies in Germany.
German Institutions of Higher Education do not usually employ agents,
nor do they charge for the counseling services. In general, scholarships
for undergraduate or postgraduate studies are not available for
international students. Students who already have obtained a master's
degree may apply for a scholarship to carry out research at a German
institution of higher education. There are a number of scholarships
offered each year under various schemes. Details are available

What is DAAD?
DAAD is an
organization of the German universities, "Facchochschulen" (Universities
of applied sciences), and research organizations which represents
them abroad and supports their international academic and scientific
relations. In that capacity, DAAD implements various academic exchange
programmes between Germany and about 130 countries in the world.
It's headquarters are in Bonn and Berlin.
What does
DAAD do?
DAAD provides
free information on:
- the system
of higher education in Germany
- German and
bilateral programmes for research grants, fellowships, and scholarships
- German and
international academic credentials (evaluation and equivalencies)
DAAD upon
application through proper channels, funds:
- one to two
year and short-term scholarships/fellowships for qualified individuals
(Master's Degree holders and up) in all academic disciplines, for
study and/or research in Germany, and for German academics to study,
teach and /or do research abroad
- group programmes
(information visits, interships, integrated study abroad programmes
for international and German students)
- academic
exchanges of scholars as part of research projects and/or university/departmental
links
What DAAD
does not do:
It does:
- not provide
financial assistance to undergraduates, non-resident citizens of
any country, or private/charitable organizations
- not disseminate
information about any aspect of life in Germany, out side of higher
education and research.
- not offer
support for the study of the German language (except for its own
prospective fellowship holders) Whenever possible, DAAD New Delhi
will furnish interested parties with address of pertinent organizations
who cover these areas.
DAAD
New Delhi
Administers
various fellowship and scholarship programmes for South Asia (India,
Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bangladesh). Its programmes in India are co-sponsored
by the Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development
(HRD), University Grants Commission (UGC). Council of Scientific
and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Council for Cultural Relations
(ICCR), and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). It is one
of 13 DAAD branch officers around the world.
It is the South
Asia Liason office for Alexander von Humboldt Foundation(AvH).Hoschschulrektorenkonferenz(HRK),
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft(DFG).Max-Planck-Society (MPG) and
has a close relationship with South Asia Institute(SAI) of the University
of Heidelberg in New Delhi.
It offers annually
a number of fellowships to the Government of India for Indian nationals
residing in India,under the Cultural Agreement between the Republic
of India and the Federal Republic of Germany.
These fellowships
are meant for advanced studies/research at German universities and
research institutes.
